Can I just lay artificial grass on soil? ›

Technically, you can choose to lay artificial grass directly on soil, or even over the top of natural grass. However, experts will often recommend that you don't do this.

There are a few different sub-base options, the most common being crushed granite stone. This is sometimes referred to as Grano dust or 4-6mm dust. You can also use limestone and MOT Type 1, but here at Artificial Lawn Company, we mainly use our own special mix of crushed granite aggregate.

Use Weed Killer Annually

To help prevent weeds or moss, once a year you should look to use a weed killer or special herbicide treatment on your fake grass. Any vegetation can then be conveniently pulled out or swept off the turf.

The cheap alternative? Just use nails – a lot of them. This is a perfectly viable seaming method for some installations, though not quite as secure. Nails can and often do work loose over time and with enough foot traffic, so we only recommend this method if your grass isn't going to get a lot of that.

The roll of grass is manufactured with a holed backing that is concealed within the pile height and not visible when laid. Water simply drains straight through these holes and into the aggregate base below. As you might expect, after heavier rainfall the grass may take longer to dry than with a light shower.

Firstly, there is a strong chance that weeds and surviving grass will grow through, creating an unattractive, uneven surface. A fully cleared, levelled surface with adequate drainage is the way to go if you want your synthetic lawn to go the distance. In other words, you're going to need to remove your existing grass.

The grass itself should be fully permeable so that rainwater can run straight through it to the sub-base, however, it's the sub-base installation that potentially poses problems. Good quality artificial grass, when installed correctly, should drain rainwater through a drainage base below the levelling layer (sand).

Having proper drainage is the single most important step in artificial grass installation. Drain rock is crushed rock or gravel that allows water to pass through easily. Southwest Boulder recommends a ¾” crushed rock for most applications.

Lay 80mm of crushed rock/roadbase and compact with vibrating plate. The level of crushed rock/roadbase when compacted should be 15-20mm below “finished height” of surrounding edging/paving. Lay your artificial grass, making sure you start from one edge and roll out.

Regular Cleaning

Best practice is to clean artificial turf each week if it gets heavy use or experiences significant dust or debris accumulation, such as leaves or blooms. Larger debris can be removed with a rake or brush. A light rinse with a hose can remove dust or smaller debris.

Sand infill adds stability to your artificial grass fibres. Improved stability helps the fibres to stay upright, giving your lawn a neat and presentable natural look. Using infill helps to adjust the bending point of the grass blades, reducing the fatigue effect where the blades lay down more.

What should be the Depth for the Sub base? For domestic applications, we recommend a minimum depth of 50mm. For commercial or public use, such as artificial grass at schools, playgrounds, offices and shops or an area with a very high volume of footfall, we recommend installing a sub-base of between 70mm to 100mm.

If you like your lawn to look freshly cut, anything between 25-30mm is a great choice. For a natural-looking lawn, we suggest you choose a height between 30-38mm. Anything longer than this can affect the fibers as it tends to lie underweight rather than standing upright.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the turf may still freeze and become more stiff in sub-zero temperatures.
